Construction forges ahead on unique retirement community

Nov 15, 2016

Canterbury Woods Gates Circle occupies the former site of the Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital. Ground was broken and construction got underway in early May. It’s expected that the building will be completed in the fall of 2017.

Canterbury Woods Gates Circle will be the first urban Continuing Care Retirement Community in New York State! It will be the centerpiece of a unique property slated to become an intergenerational neighborhood with apartments and townhomes, a fitness and wellness center, grocery store, retail shops and office space.

Buffalo officials like Mayor Byron Brown see the development not just as a unique senior living community, but also as a project that will pave the way for more investment, growth and development in Buffalo.

Now that the supporting structure has been finished, work will begin on the building’s exterior—a striking mix of terra cotta, brick, limestone and glass. What’s inside will be just as spectacular. Residents will choose from bright, spacious, elegantly appointed apartments ranging from 800 to 2,000 square feet. Onsite services and amenities will support the active, urban retirement lifestyle Buffalo seniors have told us that they prefer. These are folks who want to remain involved in their community and to continue enjoying the activities, entertainment and shopping options that downtown Buffalo and Elmwood Village offer.

The Gates Circle location is ideal not just because it’s so close to the excitement of Buffalo’s revitalized downtown, but also because it’s right next door to the lovely, historic Elmwood Village neighborhood. One of the most charming, vibrant and popular areas in central Buffalo, Elmwood Village was named one of the Top 10 Great Places in America in 2007 by the American Planning Association. Hundreds of local shops, restaurants, coffeehouses, bars and art galleries line Elwood Avenue, and the neighborhood is famed for its Queen Anne-style homes. All of this, plus the delightful Delaware Park, are within walking distance of Canterbury Woods Gates Circle.

Our flagship community, Canterbury Woods Williamsville, brought the new concept of a Continuing Care Retirement Community to Western New York. The new campus will also provide residents with the freedom to create their ideal retirement lifestyle without worrying about their care as they grow older. The same core values of innovation, passion, ethics, dignity, respect, dedication and accountability will guide us as we seek to embody the highest level of commitment to and care for our residents.

Demand for the 53 independent-living apartments at Canterbury Woods Gates Circle has been very strong, and there’s only one way that you can be among the fortunate folks who will live here—joining the Priority Wait List.

The Wait List secures your place in line to be offered an apartment but does not obligate you in any way. Joining also gives you access to special events and valuable educational seminars.
